Britpop中文翻译为"英式摇滚" ,Britpop虽有个“ Pop"字，但其实是 Rock的一种，中文可译为“英式摇滚”，这种音乐起源与九十年代初的英国。The Beatles确立了很长时期的英国传统和谐的音乐，吉他流行乐队，是一种通过音乐运动时常更新的传统形式。然而英伦摇滚采用了很多90年代那些比之前任何时期对传统音乐的使用都要多的乐队。尽管这个音乐形式起源于英国音乐独立时期，但是英伦摇滚有很大的商业价值---这类型的乐队在经济上可以得到很多的报酬，他们是闪亮的，容易让人上瘾的，就像主流的流行歌手们一样，并且为新一代英国年轻人的生活创造了新的精神环境。它被英国的年轻一代瞄准：因为英伦摇滚甚少关心其路线是否会使自身较难被美国听众接受，从而使英国年轻的一代充分感觉其唱出了他们的生活、文化和音乐追求。英伦摇滚年轻的活力和渴望的公认特点不仅是对90年代早期低调shoegazer风格乐队的老一辈乐手有冲击作用，还对美国阴沉的车库以及在新崛起的地下电子舞曲背后搞创作的乐手有一定的影响力。从音乐上来看，英伦摇滚沿袭了the Beatles，当然也融合了60年代晚期Kinks的田园之声，中速音乐(the Who, the Small Faces),70年代的迷幻(David Bowie, T.Rax, Roxy Music),朋克和新浪潮(the Jam, the Buzzcocks, Wire, Madness, XTC, Squeeze, Elvis Costello),还有the Smiths的另类吉他流行。所有的这些乐手都是英国音乐的精髓---他们用明显的英国思维极大地发挥想象、作词和谱曲，这也是他们几乎没法和美国的Cult相比的原因以及造成英伦摇滚形式单一的一大因素。在影响中分裂后，英伦摇滚已经在曼切斯特拥有了他们最迅速的根基，那是个强调好时机和偏重于shoegazer美学易记曲调的地方。The Stone Roses的颓靡流行风格和摇滚明星的姿态是英伦摇滚创立的主要部分，但是真正意义上的英伦摇滚之父应当属于Suede。在1993年以同名专辑第一次发行唱片时，他们那融合了glam-rock权威的式样和Smiths改进后的风格使他们得到了意想不到的出色效果。Suede为之后1994年的Blur(Parklife)和Oasis(Definitely Maybe)更强烈的突破开启了大门，从而使他们很快地成为了英伦摇滚的两大最流行的巨星。由前两者的成功，炫目地在乐坛上爆炸而得到灵感，用相似的风格出现的乐队：Elastica, Pulp, Supergrass, the Boo Radleys也同样并列于巨星行列。到了1996，只有Oasis真正地成为了美国乐坛主流音乐的明星。1997年英伦摇滚盛行光环的逐渐消失，也就是Oasis在回顾第三张专辑时的贫乏表现和Blurs转向美国独立摇滚的时期。然而就是在这场运动中慢慢暗淡的巨星们，也仍有个别的继续保持强大的势力，较少的初期传统摇滚保持古典风格继续生存。

在音乐上，The Jesus And Mary Chain不仅继承了the Velvet Underground噪音风格，同时也继承了他们与排行榜无缘的传统。如果我们今天回过头看The Jesus And Mary Chain的音乐，会发现他们的音乐是动听的旋律内核外面包着一层厚厚的噪音墙，这内核源于60年代的the Beach Boys，所以，有人把他们的音乐比喻成the VU与the Beach Boys的私生子。但是这个私生子却开辟了新噪音时代的先河，与纽约的Sonic Youth遥相呼应。The Jesus And Mary Chain对后来的许多乐队产生了至关重要的影响。
